Have you ever wondered why male erection is talked about in every other advertisement, while female desire is shamefully silenced? Or why finding a doctor who takes pain during sex seriously is harder than winning the lottery? It turns out this is not a coincidence but the result of long-standing systemic problems in medicine.

In a recent episode of the International Society for Sexual Medicine's podcast, physician Rachel Rubin discussed why female sexual health has remained on the sidelines for years. According to her, historically, research and medical training have focused mostly on men. Women's issues—from low libido to pain during sex—were dismissed as "all in your head" or "just one of those things." Yet these are medical conditions just like diabetes or hypertension.

Why did this happen? First, stigma. Female sexuality has been taboo for centuries, and women have been embarrassed to talk about it even with a doctor. Second, doctors simply aren't trained: medical schools allocate only a few hours to sexual health, and even then, mostly about men. Third, the healthcare system itself is structured so that female sexual health receives few resources and little research. The result is a vicious cycle: no knowledge, no diagnosis, no treatment.

But there is good news. Dr. Rubin is confident the situation can be changed. Three things are needed: advocacy (actively promoting the topic), mentorship for young physicians, and teamwork where gynecologists, urologists, psychologists, and sexologists work together. Already, more specialists are emerging who want to help, and more women who are not afraid to talk about their problems.

What does this mean for you? If you have questions about your sexual health—don't dismiss them. Look for a doctor who truly listens rather than brushes you off. Ask about your sensations, pain, and desire. You may have to switch more than one doctor, but the result is worth it. Your right to a fulfilling life without shame and pain is in your hands.
